Shipowners sue Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea over tanker disposal block

Samsung Heavy Industries said on the 6th that it had been sued for injunctions to prohibit the disposal of and the transfer of possession for two crude oil carriers.

According to the filing, shipowners Tethys Lines and Gaia Lines filed with the Tongyeong Branch of the Changwon District Court on the 2nd, seeking injunctions to prohibit the disposal of and the transfer of possession of the vessels until an arbitration award, arguing that Samsung Heavy Industries’ contract termination was unjust. The claim amount is 259.7 billion won.

The vessels subject to the injunction request are two crude oil carriers that Samsung Heavy Industries won in June 2023. Samsung Heavy Industries notified the shipowners of contract termination in February and March, respectively, citing failure to pay the final installment for each vessel.

A Samsung Heavy Industries official said, “We believe our contract termination is valid and that the applicant’s claims are groundless,” and noted that the company “will respond in accordance with legal procedures through legal counsel.”
