On March 5, the methanol bunkering vessel Hai Gang Zhi Yuan safely berthed alongside CMA CGM Group’s vessel CMA CGM OSMIUM to conduct green methanol bunkering operations. The bunkering volume reached over 3,640 metric tons, setting a new domestic record for the largest single-vessel green methanol bunkering operation.

This marks the first methanol fuel bunkering operation for CMA CGM’s 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container vessel at Shanghai Port. It further elevates the comprehensive service capabilities of Shanghai’s International Shipping Green Fuel Bunkering Center for international liner services, underscoring the Port of Shanghai’s leading position within the global green shipping service network.

Currently, the global shipping industry is accelerating its green and low-carbon transformation, with green marine fuel becoming a core direction for promoting this transformation.
Recently, ten departments, including the Ministry of Transport, jointly issued the “Implementation Plan on Supporting the Construction of Shanghai International Shipping Green Fuel Bunkering Center and Trading Center,” outlining a series of support measures from the dimensions of capacity, bunkering services, and safety supervision. This provides strong policy impetus for Shanghai to build a world-leading international shipping center and promote the low-carbon transformation of the shipping sector.
The Port of Shanghai has established a comprehensive methanol fuel supply chain spanning terminal operations, storage and transportation, and bunkering services, achieving seamless integration and efficient coordination across all links. This record-breaking single-vessel bunkering volume not only demonstrates the Port of Shanghai’s robust capability in green methanol supply but also underscores international shipping companies’ high recognition of the port’s green energy bunkering services.
Data from the Yangshan Port Maritime Safety Administration shows that since Shanghai Port completed China’s first green methanol bunkering operation on April 10, 2024, it has facilitated methanol bunkering for 27 vessels, totaling 90,300 metric tons. Among these, seven vessels received green methanol bunkering, amounting to 17,200 metric tons. Shanghai Port now leads global major ports in the volume of green methanol bunkering for ships.
