Three Domestic Firsts Achieved: COSCO Shipping’s 16,000 TEU Methanol Dual-Fuel Containership Series Fully Delivered

On March 6, the “COSCO Shipping Lily” was officially named and unveiled. This ship is the final piece of the first batch of 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships built by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) for COSCO Shipping Lines.

The first ship in the series built by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou), “COSCO Shipping Yangpu,” was named on February 18, 2025. In the following year, “COSCO Shipping Carnation” and “COSCO Shipping Panama” were delivered and put into operation. With the completion and naming of “COSCO Shipping Lily”, all four new ships in the series have been delivered.

This series of ships has achieved three historic “domestic firsts”: securing the first order for methanol dual-fuel container ships from a Chinese shipowner, delivering the first methanol dual-fuel container ship built by a domestic shipyard, and realizing the first real-ship application of domestically-manufactured methanol engines.

This ship measures 366 meters in length overall and 51 meters in beam, with a container capacity of 16,136 TEUs. It reduces carbon emissions by approximately 8.9% compared to conventional energy vessels. Equipped with an intelligent central control system, it enables smart management throughout the entire ship operation process.

The ship is equipped with the world’s first domestically produced WinGD methanol dual-fuel main engine, along with a methanol dual-fuel generator and a marine dual-fuel boiler. Its “品”-shaped methanol tank layout optimizes space utilization, and its intelligent ship control system enhances its overall intelligence. Compared to traditional energy sources, a single ship can reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 120,000 tons annually, and its EEDI is more than 50% better than the baseline.
