On February 11, New Yangzi Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, delivered the 83,300 DWT caustic soda/bulk cargo carrier “BALDER” built for Norwegian shipowner Klaveness Combination Carriers.

In 2023, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group signed a construction contract with Norwegian shipowner Klaveness Combination Carriers for three 83,300 DWT third-generation caustic soda/bulk cargo carriers, which are scheduled to be delivered in 2026.
The vessel delivered this time is the first in this series of vessels. It is 228.40 meters long, 20.90 meters deep, 34.80 meters wide, has a structural draft of 14.5 meters, and a deadweight tonnage of approximately 83,300 tons under full load. It is classified by DNV.
The vessel’s dimensions have been optimized specifically for routes to and from Australia, maximizing its seaworthiness to match the ports it serves. Both main and auxiliary engines meet Tier III emission standards, employing air lubrication and shaft-driven engines, and incorporating energy-saving and environmentally friendly measures such as provisions for future conversion to methanol and LNG fuels. The vessel’s hatch covers feature double-sealed design, ensuring convenient and efficient operation in dry cargo mode and safe loading of cargo in liquid cargo mode.
The vessel has an optimised hull design, specifically tailored for the trade route to and from Australia, with its seaworthy dimensions maximised to match the ports served. Both the main engine and auxiliary engines comply with Tier III emission standards. The vessel is equipped with energy-saving and environmentally friendly features including an air lubrication system and shaft generators, and is ready for future conversion to methanol or LNG fuel. The vessel is fitted with double-sealed hatch covers, ensuring convenient and efficient operation in dry bulk mode, as well as safe cargo loading in liquid cargo mode.

Furthermore, the vessel’s highly automated monitoring and alarm system, centralized control system, and real-time performance monitoring system fully demonstrate its advanced operational capabilities and economic efficiency. Its flexible and versatile cargo loading characteristics allow it to cater to both short-term and long-term market operation strategies for shipowners. With its superior energy efficiency and low carbon emissions, this type of vessel represents a highly competitive, green, and efficient solution in the dry bulk and liquid cargo transportation sector.
It is understood that the naming ceremony for the vessel will be held on November 10, 2025. On February 6, 2026, Mr. Herik Semb Ronningen, the owner’s representative of KLAVENESS, and Mr. Du Chengzong, Vice General Manager of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group and General Manager of New Yangzi Shipbuilding, signed the delivery documents on behalf of their respective parties.
