China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Qingshan Shipyard”) is making orderly progress in restoring its shipbuilding capacity and plans to fully restart its main shipbuilding business in 2026.

On February 9, Yu Zhicheng, Secretary of the CPC Qingshan District Committee and Secretary of the Party Working Committee of the Chemical Industry Zone of Wuhan, led a delegation to inspect and survey the progress of restoring shipbuilding capacity at Qingshan Shipyard.
Xu Lian, Secretary of the Party Committee and General Manager of Qingshan Shipyard, reported to Yu Zhicheng on the shipyard’s capacity restoration plan and construction targets. Xu stated that relying on the full industrial chain resources of China Merchants Group, Qingshan Shipyard will focus on the construction of small and medium-sized high value-added vessels, while promoting the development of a “garden factory”. The shipyard plans to restore its shipbuilding capacity in 2026, injecting new momentum into economic growth, employment stability and industrial upgrading in Qingshan District. Yu Zhicheng noted that the restoration of shipbuilding capacity at Qingshan Shipyard is of great significance to regional economic development, and the district government will fully support the renewal and upgrading of the central enterprise manufacturing base.

Founded in the 1950s, Qingshan Shipyard was once the largest civilian shipbuilding plant in Hubei Province, having built a total of 630 ships (including 218 exported ships). Covering an area of 1,700 mu (approximately 113 hectares) with a 2,200-meter-long wharf, Qingshan Shipyard possesses comprehensive capabilities in designing and manufacturing various types of ships, including bulk carriers, container ships, chemical tankers, and liquefied gas carriers, all under 100,000 deadweight tons.
At the end of 2015, as part of Sinotrans & CSC Holdings Co., Ltd., Qingshan Shipyard was integrated into China Merchants Group. In November 2017, during the restructuring and integration of China Merchants Group and Sinotrans & CSC Holdings Co., Ltd., the former “China Yangtze Shipping Group Qingshan Shipyard” was officially renamed “CSC Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard Co., Ltd.” After this restructuring, Qingshan Shipyard became a third-tier unit of China Merchants Group, directly subordinate to the newly established Changjiang Shipping Group.

In April 2018, after completing the delivery of its last export bulk carrier order, Qingshan Shipyard announced its withdrawal from the shipbuilding business, ending its 69-year shipbuilding history, and transforming into steel structure manufacturing, ship repair and conversion and other fields.

In October 2024, Yu Zhicheng, secretary of the Qingshan District Committee, said in a media interview that Qingshan District was preparing to restart the shipyard in order to make good use of the natural deep-water port advantage of the bend in the Changjiang River in Qingshan.
After exiting the shipbuilding industry for many years, Qingshan Shipyard is seizing the current industry boom and has officially restarted its shipbuilding business. According to industry sources, the company’s production workshops have resumed production, with more than ten new energy ships under construction simultaneously, and the production line is scheduled until the end of 2026.
It is understood that Qingshan Shipyard will focus on the manufacturing of small and medium-sized high value-added ships and will be integrated into the China Merchants Shipbuilding system. It is expected to be renamed “China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard Co., Ltd.” (hereinafter referred to as “China Merchants Shipbuilding Qingshan Shipyard”).
