On January 21, CSSC (Tianjin) Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC), jointly with China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd. (CSTC), delivered the first methanol dual-fuel 15,000 TEU container ship in North China for France’s CMA CGM Group.

The vessel measures 366 meters in length overall, 51 meters in beam, and 30.2 meters in draft, with a capacity to carry 16,136 standard containers, including 1,000 refrigerated containers. It is designed to utilize green methanol as its primary fuel, achieving deep decarbonization throughout its entire lifecycle (reducing emissions by over 90%) and fully meeting current environmental emission standards for maritime navigation.
The vessel is also equipped with an ultra-large 11,000-cubic-meter methanol storage tank, capable of supporting a one-way voyage from the Far East to the East Coast of the United States. To ensure the safe use of methanol fuel, an innovative “品”-shaped methanol fuel storage tank design was adopted, coupled with a nitrogen purging system, to construct a comprehensive safety assurance system and effectively mitigate the safety risks of methanol fuel storage.

In terms of green and low-carbon initiatives, the vessel’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) meets Phase III standards, achieving a 54.4% reduction below the International Maritime Organization (IMO) baseline. The use of green methanol enables an annual reduction of approximately 120,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the carbon sequestration effect of planting 6.7 million trees. This truly embodies the principle of “emission reduction through navigation.”
