Hanwha Ocean Hosts Naming Ceremony for Two 174,000 cbm LNG Carriers Built for BW LNG

Recently, Hanwha Ocean held a naming ceremony for two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers built for BW LNG, a subsidiary of BW Group.

The two new vessels were named BW Nivalis and BW Borealis, with Equinor Senior Vice President Anne Mai Hatlem and Vice President Heidi Aakre serving as godmothers and bestowing blessings.

The “BW Nivalis” takes its name from the Latin word for “snow”, while the “BW Borealis” signifies “the north”. The two sister vessels are scheduled to be delivered in the first quarter of 2026 and then immediately deployed under a long-term charter with Norway’s state-owned energy giant.

According to reports, both LNG carriers named in this ceremony fly the Singapore flag, each with a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic meters. They are equipped with MEGI propulsion systems, full-scale reliquefaction units, shaft generators, and automated liquefaction systems. Featuring innovative design, this vessel type is claimed to achieve the industry’s lowest fuel consumption and emission levels.
