COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) Breaks Ground on Major Shipyard Upgrade to Boost Efficiency and High-End Ship Capabilities

On December 30, the groundbreaking ceremony for the shipbuilding energy efficiency improvement project at COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) was successfully held, marking the project’s official entry into the substantive construction phase.

As a major project and key initiative of COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan), the Shipbuilding Energy Efficiency Improvement Project received formal approval from COSCO SHIPPING Group on November 5, 2025. With a total construction area of 42,831.51 square meters, the project covers key production support facilities including the expansion of No. 2 hull workshop, construction of No. 4 coating workshop, and No. 4 sandblasting workshop and power distribution station, the expansion of the distribution plant, and the construction of paint warehouse and oil and chemical warehouse, etc., aiming to systematically improve the efficiency of hardware facilities and production processes.

The implementation of the shipbuilding energy efficiency improvement project represents a key initiative for COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) Service Group to advance its development and optimize its product portfolio. According to the plan, the project has a total scheduled duration of 400 calendar days and is expected to be completed and delivered in the first quarter of 2027.

Upon completion, the project will significantly optimize the enterprise’s production layout and enhance its supporting capabilities for the construction of large-scale vessels. In particular, it will strengthen the supporting capacity and production efficiency for building 200,000 to 300,000 DWT bulk carriers, consolidate and elevate the core competitiveness in this sector, further enrich the product portfolio, and provide robust support for expanding into the high-end shipbuilding market.

Meanwhile, the project will deeply integrate the concepts of “green production, digital operation, and intelligent manufacturing,” actively promoting the transformation and upgrading of the production model towards efficiency, low-carbon and intelligence.

In recent years, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) has consistently pursued forward-looking development strategies, focusing its efforts on cultivating the high-value-added shipbuilding market while steadily advancing a series of major engineering projects.

On August 30, 2025, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan)’s quay No. 9 commenced operations, marking a new phase in the company’s shipbuilding and repair capacity expansion. On October 30, the quay No. 8 project passed its completion acceptance inspection.

It is reported that the COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) quay No. 8 and quay No. 9 project officially commenced construction on September 30, 2024. The project includes the construction of a new 300,000-ton outfitting quay (quay 8) and a 150,000-ton outfitting quay (quay 9). The total length of the berth at quay No. 8 is 476 meters, and the total length of the berth at quay No. 9 is 357.6 meters. The project also includes the construction of three approach bridges, outfitting facilities, and other related infrastructure.

In addition to the No. 8 and No. 9 quay construction projects, the main structure of COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan)’s No. 4 dry dock has also been successfully completed recently. Construction of this project began on April 2, 2024, and it is a key project for COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) to optimize its long-term development and production capacity layout. The dry dock is designed as a modern, large-scale 300,000-ton-class shipbuilding and repair dock, with a total construction area of 51,600 square meters and a main structure measuring 430 meters long, 120 meters wide and 15.2 meters deep.

Upon completion, the project will enable COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) to focus on the repair and construction of new energy vessels, high-tech, high-performance and high-value-added vessels, further strengthening its comprehensive capabilities in green, low-carbon and high-quality development. This will be of great significance for expanding the company’s production capacity, improving economies of scale and enhancing market competitiveness, and will also provide global customers with higher quality and more efficient ship repair and construction services.

With the commissioning of quay No. 8 and quay No. 9 in September and November this year, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) has formed a production facility layout covering 3 dry docks, 2 slipways and 9 berths.

Once the No. 4 dry dock is completed and the intelligent system is fully operational, and the shipbuilding energy efficiency improvement project is completed and delivered in the first quarter of 2027, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) will achieve a systematic improvement in its overall shipbuilding and repair capabilities, technical level and resource layout, enhance its ability to develop the high-end shipbuilding and repair market, and inject strong momentum into the company’s high-quality and sustainable development.
