After a six-month hiatus, China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry has expanded its shipyard portfolio once again: Nanjing Dongze Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.” has completed its restructuring investment and set sail again as the new China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard.
On December 20, China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Nanjing Shipyard Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard”) successfully held its inauguration ceremony alongside the naming and delivery ceremony for a 25,900 DWT stainless steel chemical tanker. This milestone signifies the completion of China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard’s restructuring and integration, marking its official incorporation into the China Merchants Shipbuilding system with a brand-new identity and enters a new stage of high-quality development.

Deng Renjie, Vice General Manager of China Merchants Group, Jiang Min, Vice Mayor of Nanjing, Sun Haidong, Secretary of the Qixia District Committee of Nanjing, Wang Chengjiang, Mayor of Qixia District, and other relevant leaders and guests attended the relevant ceremony and jointly witnessed the unveiling of “China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard”.
The 25,900 DWT stainless steel chemical tanker “SC EMERALD”, named and delivered on the same day, is the first vessel built by China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard.
During the ceremony, Deng Renjie stated that as the inheritor of China Merchants Group’s century-long maritime legacy, China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry has consistently dedicated itself to advancing the high-quality development of China’s shipbuilding industry. The successful delivery of this vessel represents not only a triumphant collaboration but also marks the first ship delivered by China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard following its revitalization and relaunch. This milestone signifies a comprehensive upgrade in both production capabilities and strategic positioning for the shipyard.
Wang Chengjiang stated that the revitalization of China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard, achieving “restructuring, production, and delivery all within the same year,” serves as a benchmark example of revitalizing existing assets and promoting industrial upgrading. It also fully demonstrates the strategic vision, strong resource integration efficiency, and first-class operation and management standards of China Merchants Group.
Nanjing Dongze Shipbuilding was established in March 2005, primarily engaged in shipbuilding. Subsequently, due to operational reasons, the company leased out its factory premises, equipment, harbor basin, land, and related ancillary facilities located at No. 2 Jiangbian Road, Dapeng Village, Longtan Subdistrict, Qixia District, Nanjing City.
On March 26, 2025, the Qixia District People’s Court filed a case to review the debtor Dongze Shipbuilding’s application for bankruptcy reorganization, and on the same day designated Beijing Dacheng Law Offices as the administrator of Dongze Shipbuilding.
In July of the same year, the administrator of Nanjing Dongze Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. issued the “Announcement on Recruiting Reorganization Investors of Nanjing Dongze Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.”, officially launching the bankruptcy reorganization procedure of the shipyard. In November, China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group completed its restructuring investment in Nanjing Dongze.

It is understood that the China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard enjoys a superior geographical location, adjacent to Longtan Port and on the south bank of the main channel of the Yangtze River. It covers an area of approximately 300,000 square meters, with a 1-kilometer shoreline and ample water depth at the wharf. Upstream and downstream, there are anchorages for oil tankers in Yizheng and for joint inspections in Nanjing Port, with open waters in the anchorages.
China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard possesses two 50,000-ton wide-body slipways, each equipped with one 200-ton and one 150-ton gantry crane. It has constructed one deep-water dry dock, along with shipbuilding workshops including steel processing, block fabrication, and coating facilities, as well as other supporting buildings and infrastructure, capable of meeting the construction requirements for its primary vessel types. Furthermore, the site of China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard is not yet fully utilized, indicating potential for future development.
China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry stated that, standing at a new starting point, China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard will comprehensively enhance its core competitiveness, maintain its leading position in the niche market of small and medium-sized chemical tankers and gas carriers, and strive to achieve leading domestic levels in efficiency, quality and profitability.

It is worth noting that with the renaming and relaunch of China Merchants Shipbuilding Nanjing Shipyard, China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry has established two new shipyards this year. In the first half of the year, China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry successfully acquired Qingdao Yangfan Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Qingdao Yangfan) and renamed it “China Merchants Industry Qingdao Shipyard”.
At present, although China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry has established separate brands including Yiu Lian Dockyards, China Merchants Heavy Industry, China Merchants Jinling, and China Merchants Cruise for its diverse business segments, and has built multiple manufacturing bases in core regions such as the Bohai Bay, the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, it has not yet developed large-scale market competitiveness in the larger traditional merchant vessel market covering oil tankers, container ships, and bulk carriers.
With the incorporation of Qingdao Shipyard into China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry, the company’s coverage of these three mainstream merchant vessel types has been further expanded. This will help integrate and optimize its shipbuilding resources and layout, as well as enhance its shipbuilding capacity.
Beyond expanding its business footprint, China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry made its public debut in early December under a new identity. The company changed its name from China Merchants Industry Group to China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group, and its official Weibo account was also updated on December 2 from “China Merchants Industry” to “China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry.”
