Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Launches First Methanol Dual-Fuel 5,900 TEU Container Ship

On August 27, Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding successfully launched the first methanol dual-fuel 5,900 TEU container ship at the Tsuneishi Zhoushan Xiushang Yard. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in February 2026.

To meet the sustained growth in market demand in recent years, this 5,900 TEU container ship is the largest container ship built by Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding to date. Its cargo holds and deck can accommodate up to 5,915 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). To address the increasing demand for refrigerated containers in recent years, it can carry up to 1,400 refrigerated containers.

In terms of technological application, in addition to optimizing the hull form and adopting Tsuneishi Shipbuilding’s proprietary energy-saving technology MT-FAST, the container ship is equipped with a high-capacity shaft generator. As a result, this dual-fuel ship achieves state-of-the-art loading performance while maintaining fuel efficiency comparable to heavy oil ships of the same class.

Notably, the ship is powered by green methanol and was developed and designed around the concept of “creating the ultimate CO₂ zero-emission solution.” Consequently, not only does the main engine run on methanol fuel, but the onboard Hyundai Heavy Industries HiMSEN engine (8H32DF-LM) generator also supports methanol fuel, fully advancing the goal of carbon neutrality. Additionally, the ship is equipped with systems capable of handling high-capacity shore power supply. By shutting down generators during anchorage, it further achieves zero CO₂ emissions.

A representative from Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding stated, “The launch of the methanol dual-fuel 5900 TEU container ship marks a milestone in the history of Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding. We will continue to construct new-type fuel ships that reduce environmental impact, enhance ship added value, and ensure product safety and quality. Through these efforts, we are committed to building a society where humans and the environment coexist harmoniously, and contributing to a sustainable and better future.”
