China’s CRCC Begins Construction of Smart Shipbuilding Project in Tongzhou Bay with Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding

According to China Railway Fourth Bureau Group (CRCC), on July 23, Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and CRCC held a steel cutting ceremony for their shipbuilding project at CRCC’s Tongzhou Bay Intelligent Manufacturing Base. The two parties signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement on March 2, 2025.

This 7,000-TEU container ship is specifically designed for standardized transportation, featuring large hatches, grid-type cargo holds, and multi-deck container stacking structures to meet the demands of rapid loading and unloading and large-scale maritime transport. CRCC is mainly responsible for the construction of the core structure of the ship, the transverse bulkhead.

Zhang Qipeng, deputy general manager of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, said that the launch of this shipbuilding construction project is a concrete action of Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding to optimize its industrial layout, reflecting its determination to serve the global market. Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding will work with CRCC to integrate resources, give full play to its professional capabilities, and transform the cooperation between the two sides into actual productivity and innovation, so as to build a shipbuilding and offshore industry cluster in Tongzhou Bay and make positive contributions to the progress of China’s shipbuilding industry.

CRCC said that the company will make full use of Nantong’s important advantages of superior business environment and industrial agglomeration development, and strive to create a “new model” of co-construction and win-win between the central government, local governments and enterprises; actively integrate into Nantong’s strategic layout, and help write a “new chapter” in the modernization construction of a “strong, prosperous, beautiful and advanced” new Nantong.

Since its establishment, CRCC has accelerated the development of steel structure expertise while extending the industrial chain in an orderly manner, forming business segments such as bridge engineering, construction engineering, decoration and renovation, design and development, engineering equipment and processing and manufacturing. In particular, it has set domestic and world records in the field of complex bridge steel structures such as those with large scale, technical difficulty and crossing rivers and seas.

The launch of this ship block construction is a vivid practice of CRCC’s active exploration of the “second curve”, and it is also an important supplement and powerful enhancement to the main business of steel structure. In the next step, the company will continue to create new advantages, develop new businesses, and create new achievements on the basis of strengthening its main business, providing new momentum for the company to achieve its high-quality development goals.

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding is one of the backbone shipbuilding companies under China State Shipbuilding Corporation. It has long been focusing on the design and construction of large high-tech ships and is one of the most large-scale, modern, professional and influential shipbuilding companies in the industry. By the end of June 2025, a total of 596 ships and offshore engineering products of various types have been delivered, exceeding 100 million deadweight tons.
