CIMC SOE Breaks Ground on China’s First Ultra-Large Stainless Steel Ship Fuel Tanks for MSC

Recently, Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Co., Ltd (CIMC SOE) cut steel for the first set of 9450 cbm stainless steel fuel tanks for Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard Co. LTD (Changhong International) in the company’s east area.

It is reported that this project is the first domestic ultra-large stainless steel fuel tank for ships, with a total of 12 sets, each set equipped with a 9450 cbm liquid tank, which will be installed on the 19000TEU dual-fuel container ordered by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) at Changhong International to provide power for container ships.

In order to make full use of the internal space of the container ship and meet the loading needs of various fuels such as LNG, liquid ammonia and methanol, the liquid tank adopts a stacked double-piece tank design with a diameter of about 13 meters, a length of about 40 meters, a height of about 29 meters, a completed weight of about 1120 tons, a design minimum temperature of -163°C, and a design maximum pressure of 4.0 barg.

The commencement of the 9450 cubic stainless steel tank project not only marks CIMC SOE’s successful entry into the field of ultra-large stainless steel tank manufacturing for ships, but also reflects the customer’s full trust in CIMC SOE’s tank manufacturing capabilities. In the future, CIMC SOE will continue to innovate in the field of stainless steel tanks for ships and help the global shipping clean transformation.
