Petrobras to Decommission 68 Offshore Units

Petrobras has announced that it plans to decommission 68 offshore units involving offshore platforms and floating production storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs), with three of the FPSOs to be repurposed.

According to the plan, 10 offshore units are expected to be decommissioned by 2029, with two of them to be completed in 2025; the remaining 58 offshore units will be decommissioned successively after 2029. Petrobras will work with about 70 Brazilian shipyards to dismantle the relevant offshore units.

Of the 10 offshore units scheduled to be retired before 2029, at least three FPSOs will be refurbished and repurposed, namely P-35, P-37 and P-47, which were previously deployed in the Marlim oil field. With the addition of the FPSOs Anna Nery and Anita Garibaldi to the Marlim and Voador revitalization projects, P-35, P-37 and P-47 have been withdrawn one after another, and the P-18, P-19, P-20, P-26, P-32, P-33, P-35, P-37 and P-47 platforms have also been replaced.

Currently, Sinaval, the Brazilian shipyard employers’ union, and the Brazilian Oil and Gas Institute are working with Petrobras to determine which offshore units can be modernized for further use, with the final results expected by the end of July.
