COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers Takes Delivery of 85,000 DWT Multi-Purpose Vessel with Breakthrough Cargo Flexibility

On May 15th, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC)’s Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (SHGSIC) named “CSPC MERCURY”, an 85,000 DWT series of new multi-purpose (MPP) vessels built for COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers. This series of vessels is currently the world’s largest professional pulp carrier.

CSPC MERCURY measures 225 meters in length, 36 meters in beam and has a structural draft of 14.5 meters. Its design speed reaches 15.5 knots and its range extends to 25,000 nautical miles, making it an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly green and intelligent vessel. The cargo holds are all box-shaped and equipped with a rotary dehumidifier, which fully ensure the quality and safety of pulp cargo during transportation.

In addition to meeting the loading requirements of pulp customers, the vessel is also suitable for loading high-speed trains, wind power equipment, new energy vehicles, large machinery and equipment, and ultra-long and ultra-heavy steel pipe pile structures. In order to ensure the safety of transportation of new energy vehicles, this series of vessels has added “one-to-one” temperature monitoring and warning system.

“CSPC MERCURY” is the first 85,000 DWT series new multi-purpose vessel delivered by SHGSIC, and is the third new type multi-purpose vessel of this series received by COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers. The vessel will load cargoes from domestic ports to Saudi Arabia, Egypt and other countries on its maiden voyage.

According to the official website, COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers currently owns and controls more than 170 vessels of various types, and the scale and strength of its fleet of specialized carriers rank among the top in the world. In recent years, the company has connected and operated more than 50 multi-purpose vessels of 62,000 DWT, 68,000 DWT, 72,000 DWT, 77,000 DWT and 85,000 DWT, etc., which has continuously improved the scale of the company’s fleet capacity and operational capability.
