Samsung Heavy Industries christened a 180,000 m³ LNG carrier

Samsung Heavy Industries will deliver the fourth of 10 180,000 m³ liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to Danish shipping company Celsius Shipping.

Samsung Heavy Industries recently held a naming ceremony for Celsius Gandhinagar, the fourth 180,000 m³ LNG carrier built by Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje Shipyard for Celsius Tankers, a subsidiary of Celsius Shipping.

Celsius Tech, a joint venture between Celsius Shipping and Hong Kong Fleet Management, said recently on social media that a naming ceremony has been held for the 180,000 m³ LNG carrier Celsius Gandhinagar. The company is responsible for the management of Celsius’ vessels, including the Celsius Glarus, as well as newbuild LNG carriers to be delivered soon.

This LNG carrier is equipped with a new generation of dual-fuel LNG engines from MAN ES. It is equipped with the Mark III Flex membrane cargo enclosure system developed by GTT, which helps to significantly reduce methane leakage and improve fuel efficiency.

Besides, it is equipped with Samsung Heavy Industries’ SAVER Air Ⅱ (an air lubrication system that improves fuel efficiency by reducing frictional resistance between the ship and seawater) and SVESSEL, an intelligent ship navigation solution.

Celsius Shipping is understood to have ordered a total of 10 180,000 m³ LNG carriers from Samsung Heavy Industries to expand its fleet of LNG carriers. Excluding the latest named newbuildings, the remaining six units will be delivered in 2026.

The first LNG carrier, Celsius Geneva, was named and delivered in July 2023; the second, Celsius Giza, was delivered in October of the same year; and in January 2024, the third, Chelsea Glarus, was delivered.

The four Samsung Heavy Industries-built LNG carriers were chartered by Clearlake Shipping, a subsidiary of energy trading company Gunvor, which entered into a long-term charter agreement with Celsius for the four LNG carriers.
