Weichai Power Releases World’s First Diesel Engine with 53.09% Ontological Thermal Efficiency

April 20, in the 2024 World Congress on Internal Combustion Engines, Weichai Power Co., Ltd. officially released the world’s first 53.09% ontological thermal efficiency diesel engine. The technical achievements can be applied to ships, power generation equipment, construction machinery and other fields, marking another breakthrough in China’s diesel engine technology.

TÜV SÜD, an international authoritative testing organization and China Automotive Technology Research Center Limited, a professional testing organization for China’s internal combustion engines, granted Weichai Power the test report and certificate of thermal efficiency exceeding 53%.

Thermal efficiency is a measure of the comprehensive strength of a country’s internal combustion engine. Since the introduction of diesel engine, global industry scientists have always taken the improvement of thermal efficiency as a breakthrough goal. For a long time, the thermal efficiency of diesel engine has been maintained at about 46%, and the continuous improvement of thermal efficiency has become an international problem.

It is reported that the product has been authorized 176 invention patents and 68 utility model patents in the process of research and development.

In the future, Weichai Power will continue to promote scientific and technological innovation, moving towards the goal of 55% thermal efficiency of diesel engines. According to the current Chinese diesel engine ownership estimates, compared with 45% to 46% thermal efficiency level, 53% thermal efficiency diesel engine can improve the economy of about 14%, annual fuel savings of about 31 million tons and reduce carbon emissions of about 97 million tons.
