Hudong-Zhonghua Hands Over 174,000-cbm LNG Carrier “GreenEnergy Sea,” Marking 10th Large LNG Carrier Delivered This Year

On October 31, Hudong-Zhonghua successfully delivered the “GreenEnergy Sea”—a 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carrier built for the CNOOC Medium- and Long-Term FOB Resource-Matched LNG Carrier Project (Phase II). This vessel marks the 69th LNG carrier delivered by Hudong-Zhonghua to date, and the 8th out of the 12 LNG carriers commissioned for this specific project. So far this year, Hudong-Zhonghua has delivered a total of 10 large-scale LNG carriers.

The vessel “GreenEnergy Sea” is a fifth-generation “Changheng-series” LNG carrier, independently developed and designed by Hudong-Zhonghua. It measures 299 meters in length, 46.4 meters in beam, and 26.25 meters in depth, with a service speed of 19.5 knots and a designed capacity of 174,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas.

The vessel features a state-of-the-art cargo containment system, achieving a boil-off rate as low as 0.085%, further supported by an LNG cryogenic system that minimizes boil-off gas losses. Its dual-fuel main engine is equipped with an intelligent exhaust gas recirculation system and a water treatment system, ensuring compliance with IMO Tier III emission standards in both fuel-oil and gas-fuel modes. The vessel offers superior energy efficiency, capable of reducing daily carbon emissions by more than 10 tonnes during operation.

To date, Hudong-Zhonghua has delivered seven LNG carriers from the “GreenEnergy” series: GreenEnergy Ocean, GreenEnergy Pearl, GreenEnergy Star, GreenEnergy Moon, GreenEnergy Wind, and GreenEnergy Cloud (from the first phase), as well as GreenEnergy River (the first vessel of the second phase). From the maiden voyage of the first vessel to the ongoing fleet-wide operations, the “GreenEnergy” fleet has maintained a consistent record of operational safety, demonstrating the reliability of the “Changheng” series in terms of safety, environmental performance, and operational efficiency.

Following the delivery of the “GreenEnergy Sea,” there are four more vessels remaining to be delivered under CNOOC’s Medium- and Long-Term FOB Resource-Matched LNG Carrier Project, with all vessels expected to be delivered by the end of 2027. For Hudong-Zhonghua, the delivery of its 69th LNG carrier is not merely an increase in numbers; it is further validation that the “Changheng Series” has progressed from the construction of a prototype to series production and rhythmic construction.

By the end of October, Hudong-Zhonghua had already delivered 10 large-scale LNG carriers this year—surpassing the construction efficiency seen during the same period last year—and is on track to set a new annual record for Chinese LNG carrier deliveries. From the “GreenEnergy Ocean” to the “GreenEnergy Sea” series, and with a delivery target that continues to grow in scale, Hudong-Zhonghua’s capacity for the serial construction of large LNG carriers is serving as a robust equipment foundation, ensuring the nation’s autonomous capability in energy transportation.
