Toyo Construction Co., Ltd. (“Toyo”) announced that the delivery ceremony for a newly constructed self-propelled cable laying vessel (CLV) was held on June 26 at Vard Langsten Norway. The ceremony was attended by representatives of both Toyo Construction and the Vard Group, celebrating the vessel’s completion and its official handover.

The new vessel, “DISCOVERY,” stands as a core asset in the company’s fleet, leveraging the advanced marine engineering expertise Toyo has cultivated over the years. It is positioned to provide reliable subsea cable laying services, particularly in the rapidly developing Japanese offshore wind market.
The vessel features a gross tonnage of 18,985 tons and an overall length of 150.1 m, with a breadth of 28 m, a depth of 12.2 m, and a maximum draft of 7.0 m. It is capable of a service speed of 12 knots and is powered by a total installed power of 12,800 kW. The vessel is equipped with dual carousel systems, offering a capacity of 4,000 t above deck and 5,000 t below deck, alongside two active heave compensation (AHC) cranes—a main crane of 400 t and a sub-crane of 100 t. For dynamic positioning, the vessel meets DPS Class 2 standards and is classed by Class NK. The accommodation is designed for 90 persons, all in single cabins. Additional features include a helideck, a 4-point mooring system, and a hybrid battery system with a capacity of 2,000 kWh, further enhancing operational efficiency and environmental performance.
Following its delivery, the vessel will sail to Japan and undergo final outfitting, after which it will be prepared for full-scale operation.
Commenting on the delivery of the new vessel, Toyo’s Representative Director and President Tatsuyoshi Nakamura said: “We are honored to celebrate this milestone in partnership with Vard and the many stakeholders who have contributed to making ‘DISCOVERY’ a reality. As we prepare for full-scale operations in Japan, we remain dedicated to building long-term value for our clients, partners, and the communities we serve.”
Chairman of Vard Group Alberto Maestrini, who also attended the ceremony, said: “VARD is proud to deliver this complex and modern vessel to Toyo Construction. She is truly a product of a strong collaboration with Toyo Construction, Class NK and Vard Group with its great skills in engineering flexibility and competences to reach full adherence to Japanese class and flag, working together as OneTeam. She will be the largest purpose-built vessel for cable lay in Japan with its dual capability. The vessel is equipped with a removable cable lay system that makes her adaptable to a variety of offshore works, including among other 2 offshore cranes. I would like to extend my gratitude to all men and women putting a lot of effort into finalizing this innovative project and congratulate Toyo Construction on their new vessel.”
