Huangpu Wenchong and China United Lines Sign Deal for Four 6,400 TEU Green-Efficient Boxships

On April 28, CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., in collaboration with China Shipbuilding Trading Co. Ltd (CSTC), successfully signed a contract with China United Lines Ltd. in Guangzhou for the construction of four 6,400 TEU medium-sized container ships.

Designed by the Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC), the 6,400 TEU container ships are powered by a conventional fuel system. The vessel has an overall length of 240 meters and a beam of 42.8 meters, with a deadweight tonnage of approximately 80,310 tons, a standard container capacity of 6,406 TEU, and 1,150 reefer containers.

The vessel integrates multiple green and energy-saving technologies, including a twisted rudder with a rudder bulb, energy-saving ducts, shaft generators, and high-voltage shore power. It offers outstanding economic and environmental performance and is well-suited for mainline routes in Asia, as well as medium- to long-haul routes to the U.S. West Coast, the Red Sea, East Africa, and the Middle East. It is currently a mainstream and popular vessel type in the market.

It is reported that Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding has previously delivered four 1,900 TEU and two 2,700 TEU container ships to China United Lines. The core performance metrics of both vessel types—including fuel efficiency and loading efficiency—have been highly recognized by China United Lines, and these vessels have now become the mainstay of its fleet. Building on the deep trust fostered through long-term cooperation, China United Lines prioritized Huangpu Wenchong for commercial negotiations upon the launch of this new shipbuilding project. Project communication was efficient and smooth, and all terms were swiftly finalized.
