Japan’s shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has taken delivery of a newbuilding LPG dual-fuel very large gas carrier (VLGC) from HD Hyundai Samho.

The vessel was handed over on January 29 in waters near Mokpo Port, South Korea, and will be operated by CSSA, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, under a time charter agreement.
The Energia Grandeur features a new hull design, measuring 230 meters in length overall and 32.25 meters in beam, with a cargo capacity of 88,000 cubic meters. Equipped with shaft generators to enhance operational efficiency, it incorporates environmentally friendly specifications that further reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional LPG dual-fuel VLGCs. The vessel is capable of operating on both liquefied petroleum gas and heavy fuel oil.
Compared to traditional fuels, using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 20% and lower sulfur oxides, particulate matter, and other pollutant emissions by about 90%. In addition to LPG, the newly delivered vessels can also transport ammonia. As a next-generation clean energy source, ammonia combustion produces no carbon dioxide, and its demand is projected to increase significantly.
MOL stated that TotalEnergies and MOL have established a solid cooperative relationship across multiple fields, including marine fuel trading, long-term charters for LNG carriers and LNG bunkering vessels. This charter agreement will further deepen the partnership between the two companies.
