On January 12, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries held a naming ceremony for the “Barcelona Mærsk”, a 17,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship built for Danish shipping giant Maersk.

The “Barcelona Mærsk” is the sixth and final of six container ships ordered by Maersk from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The first ship in the series was named “Berlin Mærsk”.
This 17,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship measures 350 meters in length, 56 meters in width and has a draft of 18 meters. It can carry 17,480 TEUs and accommodate a crew of 30. Its innovative design features include: a funnel positioned close to the stern to save space, and a forward-shifted layout for the bridge and living quarters. This configuration enables efficient fuel operation while maximizing cargo capacity.
Additionally, the design of Maersk’s 17,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship closely resembles the 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships built for it by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The only significant difference lies in the 17,000 TEU ship’s wider hull, enabling it to carry more containers. This makes it the largest dual-fuel ship in Maersk’s fleet to date.
