China Launches World’s First 24,000 TEU Methanol Dual-Fuel Container Ship, Marking Green Shipping Milestone

On December 31, 2025, the world’s first 24,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship was launched in Nantong. This vessel stands as one of the largest and most technologically advanced green clean-energy container ships globally.

The 24,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship launched this time was entirely independently developed and designed by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS), integrating several industry-leading technologies. The vessel utilizes an advanced methanol dual-fuel power system, combining high efficiency with low emissions, and can achieve “carbon neutrality” throughout its operation.

Meanwhile, NACKS has overcome a series of key core technologies, including the intelligent and efficient construction of ultra-large hulls and the structural safety of methanol fuel tanks, laying a solid foundation for the independent research, development, and large-scale construction of clean energy vessels in China.

The successful construction of this vessel not only fills a gap in China’s design capabilities for methanol dual-fuel ultra-large container ships but also marks a significant milestone in the nation’s shipbuilding industry transition toward green, low-carbon, and intelligent technologies. Following the launch of the first vessel, subsequent vessels of the same class will be progressively constructed, gradually forming a scaled and serialized industrial structure. This initiative will help break foreign technological monopolies, drive the overall upgrading of China’s shipbuilding industry, and further enhance the international competitiveness of China’s equipment manufacturing sector.

As a benchmark enterprise in China’s shipbuilding industry, NACKS has been adhering to the goal of “building a world-class shipyard and manufacturing world-class vessels” since its establishment in 1995. Committed to innovation-driven development and lean manufacturing, it has successfully delivered a diverse range of high-end vessels, including ultra-large container vessels, ultra-large ore carriers and VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers), with many of these vessel types filling gaps both at home and abroad.

In recent years, NACKS has actively advanced smart manufacturing and green transformation, built a number of automated and intelligent production lines, and achieved an all-round upgrade of shipbuilding processes and management. In response to the global trend of green and low-carbon development in the shipping industry, NACKS adheres to the principle of “green shipbuilding for green ships”, takes concrete actions to fulfill the “dual carbon” goals, and contributes to the sustainable development of China’s shipbuilding industry.

NACKS stated that it will continue to uphold the development philosophy of green, innovative, and efficient practices, persistently driving technological upgrades and product iterations. The company is committed to providing global customers with more environmentally friendly and intelligent marine equipment, continuously contributing Chinese strength to advancing the establishment of a green shipping system and promoting global sustainable development.
