Samsung Heavy Industries Secures $500 Million LNG Carrier Order, Boosts Annual Tally to $7.4 Billion

On December 23, Samsung Heavy Industries announced via a public notice that it had signed a contract with an Oceania-based shipowner for the construction of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. The total order value amounts to 743 billion won (approximately $500 million), with each vessel costing about $250 million. Delivery to the shipowner is scheduled to be completed by March 2029.

With this signing, Samsung Heavy Industries has secured orders for 41 new vessels this year, worth approximately US$7.4 billion, including 9 LNG carriers, 9 shuttle tankers, 9 container ships, 2 ethane carriers, 11 crude oil carriers, and 1 preliminary FLNG contract.

In the merchant vessel sector, Samsung Heavy Industries has exceeded its annual order target of $5.8 billion, reaching approximately $6.6 billion. In the offshore sector, the company plans to expedite the completion of follow-up processes for the FLNG project under preliminary contracts and a new equipment contract.

As of December 23, Samsung Heavy Industries had a total of 132 vessels on its order book, with an order backlog valued at approximately $28.3 billion.

A Samsung Heavy Industries representative stated, “Our profit-driven order strategy, based on a strong order backlog, has proven highly effective. Moving forward, we will proactively respond to the ever-changing market environment.”
