Imabari Shipbuilding’s Subsidiary to Build 10 Bulk Carriers on Speculation

According to shipbroker Bancosta, Shimanami Shipyard, a subsidiary of Imabari Shipbuilding, has confirmed that it will speculatively build 10 40,100 DWT bulk carriers, with deliveries expected between the first quarter of 2026 and the end of 2028.

According to available information, Shimanami Shipyard, located in Imabari City, Japan, is primarily responsible for the construction of merchant ships and is an affiliated shipyard of Imabari Shipbuilding.

Since the beginning of this year, Imabari Shipbuilding has been primarily active in the new bulk carrier market, which is consistent with the current state of Japan’s shipbuilding industry.

Based on incomplete statistics, in addition to the aforementioned 10 speculatively built new vessels, Imabari Shipbuilding has also secured orders for 10 new ships this year, including 5 bulk carriers of 3 different types, 2 oil tankers, and 3 container ships.

It is worth noting that the new tanker order is for 107,000 deadweight tons Aframax tankers, marking Imabari Shipbuilding’s first new ship order since delivering Aframax tankers in 2008, a gap of 17 years.
