Shanghai Hunter Marine Equipment Wins Record Fin Stabilizer Order for Grimaldi’s New Ro-Pax Vessels

Recently, Shanghai Hunter Marine Equipment Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of CSSC 704 Research Institute, successfully won the bid for the project of 9 ship sets of fin stabilizers to be equipped on Italian Grimaldi Group’s ro-pax vessels. This achievement once again sets a new record for the largest single order of fin stabilizers secured by a Chinese shipbuilding enterprise from an overseas client.

The nine ro-pax vessels form the core of the Grimaldi Group’s “Next Generation Ro-Pax Vessel Program”. Through innovative design and technological upgrades, they will establish a new generation of premium Ro-Ro vessels—Mediterranean Class and Hansa Super Star Class—combining high capacity, low carbon emissions, and cruise-ship-level comfort. Built by China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyard, the new vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2030.

Shanghai Hunter Marine Equipment attaches great importance to this project. Based on the overall design requirements for the entire vessel, the company employs its latest structural design solution with fully independent intellectual property rights to innovate and iteratively upgrade the new vessel’s fin stabilizer system. This results in a high-end stabilizer fin system tailored specifically for premium ro-pax vessels.

First, it utilizes high-lift flap-fin technology, which has received an Excellence Patent Award. The single fin area reaches 16 and 18 square meters, raising its lift coefficient to a world-leading level. Second, it employs lightweighting technologies such as topology optimization. Compared with similar international fin stabilizers, these are not only lighter, more maneuverable, and more efficient, but also achieve a roll reduction effect of over 80%, significantly improving and enhancing ship navigation safety, crew comfort, operational punctuality, and the economic benefits of liner services.

Shanghai Hunter Marine Equipment is China’s only marine anti-rolling R&D institution and supplier integrating independent design, manufacturing, and service. The company has developed a comprehensive product portfolio covering anti-rolling fins, anti-rolling tanks, anti-heeling tanks, and anti-rolling gyros, solidifying its leading position in the ship anti-rolling industry.

In recent years, Shanghai Hunter Marine Equipment’s full range of anti-rolling products has made significant inroads into the global market. The company has successively secured nearly 100 ship-set orders in the ro-pax vessel sectors across Europe, China-South Korea routes, China-Japan routes, and the domestic market. Its product performance indicators are not only comparable to those of international brands, but also its market share and influence have been continuously expanding, enabling the company to successfully establish itself as one of the world’s mainstream suppliers.
