The first 80,000 DWT self-unloading bulk carrier ALGOMA LEGACY departed on its maiden voyage on September 28. This vessel is part of a five-vessel series constructed by Yangzi Mitsui Shipbuilding — a subsidiary of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group — for a Canadian shipowner.
The ALGOMA LEGACY successfully completed sea trials on August 17, 2025, with all performance indicators meeting design requirements. The vessel’s power system is equipped with a TIER III Methanol Ready main engine with EGR, enabling future conversion to methanol fuel, which can reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by approximately 80%, sulfur oxides (SOx) by 99% and carbon dioxide emissions by 10%.
In terms of operational efficiency, the vessel is equipped with an electric rolling and sliding hatch cover and a new generation of self-unloading device, which reduces dependence on specific port unloading facilities and can achieve continuous and efficient transshipment of cargo with an unloading rate of up to 5,000 tons/hour; it is equipped with a 1,500KW CPP thruster system and has the flexibility to adapt to berthing and unloading at various ports.
On September 26, Mr. Bradley Thomas Scarbro, representing the shipowner; Mr. Song Shuming, Deputy General Manager of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group and General Manager of Yangzi Mitsui; and Mr. Koichiro Fuki, COO of Yangzi Mitsui, jointly signed the delivery documents for the vessel “ALGOMA LEGACY”.
On the same day, Yangzi Mitsui Shipbuilding also delivered the fourth vessel in its next-generation eco-friendly 50,000 DWT MR tanker series — the JAL DHVANI — to a Singaporean shipowner. The tanker then set sail on its maiden voyage shortly after delivery.
This vessel has an overall length of 183.00 meters, a beam of 32.30 meters, a depth of 19.10 meters, and a design draft of 11.00 meters. It is a new environmentally friendly MR tanker tailored by Yangtze Mitsui Shipbuilding to meet customer requirements.
On September 24, Yangzi Mitsui Shipbuilding held a grand naming ceremony for the vessel. On the afternoon of September 26, the JAL DHVANI was successfully delivered via electronic signature.
