Maersk Names Third 17,000 TEU Methanol Dual-Fuel Boxship “Bangkok Maersk”

Recently, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries held a naming ceremony for the 17,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship “Bangkok Maersk,” built for Danish shipping giant Maersk.

This vessel is the third in a series of six container ships being built under the joint venture. The first vessel, the Berlin Maersk, was christened in June and commissioned in July. The second, the Beijing Maersk, was christened and commissioned in August, serving Maersk’s route connecting East Asia and Northern Europe. The three additional vessels in the series are expected to be delivered this year, with all six newbuildings operating under the Danish flag.

This 17,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship measures 350 meters in length and 56 meters in width, with a capacity to carry 17,480 TEUs. Its design closely resembles the 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships built for the company by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The only significant difference lies in the wider hull of the 17,000 TEU Class ships, enabling them to carry more containers. These ships are the largest dual-fuel ships in the Maersk fleet to date.

Maersk stated that this series of container ships represents a “significant step” toward achieving its net-zero emissions goal, particularly given their operation on clean fuels such as methanol. Compared to vessels using conventional heavy fuel oil (HFO), these ships can achieve at least a 60% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
