China’s largest private shipbuilder, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, has secured orders for up to eight container ships, which were disclosed by the shipowner.
On September 1, Interasia Lines, an Asian regional container shipping company, announced on its official website that it had signed a contract with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding for the construction of 6 2,900 TEU container ships with two option vessels.
The new vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2028, enhancing Interasia’s capacity to compete with confidence and remain at the forefront of sustainable and efficient shipping.
The signing ceremony took place at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s main office on 14 August 2025, with Mr. Brendan Williams, Special Assistant to the Executive Vice President of Interasia, and Mr. Ji Hongfei, Vice General Manager of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, signing the contract on behalf of the two parties.
This order marks the first collaboration between Interasia and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in the shipbuilding sector and a significant milestone in the company’s fleet expansion strategy, underscoring its ambition to strengthen its position in the Asian and global shipping markets.
On August 29, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding announced it had secured orders for 22 vessels between August 6 and August 29. According to the announcement, the 22 new vessels are valued at $920 million and are scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2029.
The orders cover three major secters: container ships, gas carriers and bulk carriers. The orders include 18 container ships, including four 1,100 TEU container ships, four 1,800 TEU container ships, six 2,900 TEU container ships, two 3,000 TEU container ships, and two 4,300 TEU container ships; two 40,000 cubic meter liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers; and two 83,000 DWT bulk carriers.
According to the signing dates disclosed by Interasia, the six 2,900 TEU container ships announced by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding represent Interasia’s new ship orders. However, two previously undisclosed option vessels were not included in the announcement.
In addition to the 2,900 TEU container ships, the owner of two 4,300 TEU container ships has also been disclosed: Greek shipping company Euroseas. Euroseas announced this order on its official website on August 25. The newbuilds are priced at approximately $59.25 million each, totaling around $118.5 million. They will be constructed by New Yangzi Shipbuilding and are scheduled for delivery in March and May 2028.
Excluding optional orders, as of August 29, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has secured orders for 36 new vessels worth $1.46 billion (approximately RMB 10.41 billion) so far this year, achieving about 24.3% of its annual order target of $6 billion. Among these, 30 are container ships, 2 are gas carriers, and 4 are bulk carriers.
According to its official website, Interasia Lines was established in Tokyo, Japan in 1967 and is one of the long-established container shipping companies in the Asian region. Its fleet list indicates that Interasia currently operates a fleet of 25 vessels with capacities ranging from 1,000 TEU to 7,200 TEU, and is currently focused on its fleet expansion plan.
