On August 21, the 16,000 TEU ultra-large container ship “Nantong Kawasaki 425” — fully independently developed, designed and constructed by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS) — successfully departed from the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River. Under the full-course escort of the Nantong MSA (Maritime Safety Administration), the ship embarked on its maiden sea trial.
This move marks another major breakthrough in China’s shipbuilding industry in the fields of high-end and intelligent development.
The ship is 366.99 meters long, 51 meters wide, and has a deadweight of approximately 160,000 tons. It can transport up to 16,828 standard containers, making it one of the largest container ships currently navigating the Panama Canal’s new locks.
The ship incorporates multiple cutting-edge energy-saving technologies, achieving internationally leading energy consumption per container. This significantly enhances China’s competitiveness in the global design and construction of large, green ships.
