CMHI Haimen shipyard Delivers 9,200 CEU Dual-Fuel PCTC “BYD CHANGSHA” to BYD

On June 24, China Merchants Heavy Industries Haimen shipyard (CMHI Haimen shipyard) held the delivery and naming ceremony for the first 9,200 CEU dual-fuel PCTC (pure car and track carrier) “BYD CHANGSHA” built for BYD Co., Ltd. (BYD) in Haimen, Jiangsu.

BYD introduced that “BYD CHANGSHA” is named after Changsha City. It has 9,200 standard loading spaces and adopts the latest LNG dual-fuel clean power technology, which enables BYD cars to be delivered to global users in a faster, safer, and more environmentally friendly manner.

The 219.9-meter-long and 37.7-meter-wide PCTC uses a dual-power system of liquefied natural gas and fuel oil, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30% compared with traditional fuel oil ships. Its 13-deck layered management system is equipped with 1,300 temperature monitoring points and is designed specifically for the transportation of new energy vehicles. It can accommodate hydrogen fuel vehicles and dangerous goods transport vehicles at the same time, and its technical standards meet the carbon neutral fuel readiness level certified by the Norwegian Classification Society.

In 2022, BYD announced a RMB 5 billion investment to order eight specialized ro-ro vessels capable of carrying over 7,000 vehicles each. The company plans to complete the construction of all eight RoRo vessels by 2026, establishing a fleet with an annual transport capacity exceeding one million new energy vehicles. Among these, two 7,000 CEU PCTCs have been delivered by China International Marine Containers (CIMC) Raffles, two 7,000 CEU PCTCs are being built by Guangzhou Shipyard International, two 9,200 CEU PCTCs are being constructed by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co. Ltd.(CMJL (Nanjing)), and the final two 9,200 CEU PCTCs are being built at the China Merchants Heavy Industries Haimen shipyard (CMHI Haimen shipyard). The recently delivered “BYD CHANGSHA” is the sixth PCTC received by BYD.

It is worth mentioning that the PCTC “BYD XI’AN”, which was delivered on the 21st of this month, also set sail on June 24th. The “BYD XI’AN” will be loaded with about 7,000 BYD cars and will head to Europe, heading to the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Belgium and other countries.

At present, BYD has put into operation several ro-ro vessels, including “EXPLORER NO.1”, “BYD CHANGZHOU”, “BYD HEFEI”, “BYD SHENZHEN” and “BYD XI’AN”, which have carried more than 70,000 BYD new energy vehicles to all parts of the world. The addition of “BYD CHANGSHA” will inject new impetus into the globalization process of BYD and Chinese automobiles.
