Purus orders a 180,000 cbm dual-fuel LNG Carrier from Hyundai Heavy Industries

On June 3, UK-based shipping company Purus Marine announced on its website that it has placed an order for a 180,000 cbm Liquified Natural Gas carrier (LNGC) from Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. Upon delivery in Q4 2027, the vessel will enter a long-term charter with a leading energy company.

This latest order brings Purus’s current newbuilding program to a total of ten gas carriers under construction at Hyundai Group-affiliated shipyards.

Equipped with advanced dual-fuel propulsion and optimised to utilise natural gas boil-off as fuel, the vessel can deliver up to a 25% reduction in CO₂ emissions and approximately 85% lower NOₓ emissions compared to conventional marine fuels. The use of LNG also ensures negligible SOₓ output and substantially reduced particulate matter, supporting cleaner operations in emission control areas. Designed for long-term efficiency and regulatory compliance, the vessel will surpass EEDI Phase III requirements and incorporate performance-optimizing features – including a twin skeg highly optimized hull design – to enhance fuel economy and propulsion efficiency.

This LNGC newbuild further underscores Purus’s continued commitment to enabling the clean energy transition by supporting the utilisation, supply, and transportation of cleaner-burning fuels.

Notably, in April this year, Purus had ordered a 180,000 cbm LNG carrier from HD Hyundai Samho at a cost of about $262 million, which was $7 million above the then market price of $255 million, and was scheduled for delivery in December 2027.
