Samudera Shipping Signs Contracts with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding for 3,000 TEU Newbuilds

On November 3, Singapore-listed Samudera Shipping Line announced that it has signed shipbuilding contracts with New Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and Yangzijiang-Mitsui Shipbuilding—both subsidiaries of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding—for the construction of two 3,000 TEU container ships, with delivery expected before 2030.

Samudera Shipping stated that this new vessel construction is part of the company’s ongoing fleet development strategy, aimed at enhancing its container shipping capacity and meeting its long-term operational requirements.

Official website information indicates that Samudera Shipping was established in 1993. Registered in Singapore and listed on the Main Board of the Singapore Exchange, it is a subsidiary of PT Samudera Indonesia Tbk, a long-established Indonesian shipping and logistics group. The company operates a fleet consisting of container ships, bulk carriers, and oil tankers, and its vessels currently serve routes connecting ports across Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Far East, and the Middle East.

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding ranks among the top tier of privately-owned shipbuilding enterprises in China. As of August 7, the company held an orderbook of 256 new vessels with a total value of $22.4 billion, with delivery schedules extending as far as 2030. It has delivered 43 vessels so far, representing 74.1% of its annual delivery target of 58 vessels.

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding is currently advancing its capacity expansion. Its new shipbuilding base—Yangzi Hongyuan Shipbuilding—will feature one 300,000-ton-class dry dock, one 200,000-ton-class outfitting quay, and one 100,000-ton-class harbor basin. The facility will be equipped with gantry cranes with capacities of 1,800 tons, 1,200 tons, and 400 tons, enabling heavy-duty lifting for large-scale vessel sections, including those for clean-energy ships. It is designed for an annual production capacity of approximately 800,000 deadweight tons (DWT) and is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2026.

It is understood that the Yangzi Hongyuan shipbuilding base represents a pivotal component of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s transformation and upgrading strategy. Designed to serve as a world-class demonstration zone for the high-quality development of clean-energy gas carriers, the facility incorporates intelligent and digital planning concepts, adopts modern shipbuilding methodologies, and functions as a state-of-the-art, smart factory. Upon completion, it will serve as the primary production hub for Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s existing orderbook of green, clean-energy vessels.
