MISC Names 174,000 m³ LNG Carrier “Th’ailib” at Samsung Heavy Industries

Recently, South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries held a naming ceremony for the “Th’ailib,” a 174,000 m³ liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier built for MISC, a subsidiary of Malaysia’s Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas).

This vessel is the first of three newbuild LNG carriers commissioned by MISC for a long-term charter project with QatarEnergy. Upon completion, the vessel will be chartered to QatarEnergy for a period of 15 years.

The “Th’ailib” is equipped with a dual-fuel engine, a reliquefaction system, high-performance anti-fouling hull coatings, and an air-lubrication system, all designed to improve fuel efficiency, optimize energy utilization, and reduce emissions intensity.

In addition, the vessel is equipped with advanced navigation, safety, and monitoring systems to ensure safe and efficient operations at sea. Designed and built in accordance with the relevant requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and international maritime standards, the vessel further enhances MISC’s ability to provide efficient and modern LNG transportation services.

The delivery of the “Th’ailib” further expands MISC’s involvement in QatarEnergy’s LNG fleet expansion plan. In the first phase of the plan, MISC secured a contract for 12 LNG carriers through a consortium; in the second phase, MISC was again awarded a contract for three newly built LNG carriers. Together, these 15 vessels will support QatarEnergy’s long-term LNG transportation needs.

Representatives from MISC stated: “LNG will continue to play a pivotal role in meeting the growing global demand for affordable energy while supporting the broader transition to a low-emission energy system, and Qatar will remain a key supplier in the global market.”
