India’s Great Eastern Shipping Acquires 157,000 DWT Suezmax Newbuild

Indian shipowner Great Eastern Shipping recently announced the acquisition of a newbuild 157,000 DWT Suezmax tanker. The vessel is being built by a shipyard in the Far East and is scheduled for delivery between October 2028 and March 2029.

Great Eastern Shipping has not disclosed the purchase price, propulsion system specifications, or the name of the shipyard, stating only that the acquisition is being funded through internal resources. This transaction marks the company’s first acquisition of a newbuild vessel under its current fleet renewal program, which had previously relied on the purchase of secondhand vessels.

According to shipbroking reports, the vessel was originally ordered by Zodiac Maritime—controlled by Israeli shipping magnate Eyal Ofer—from Samsung Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Vietnam. That initial order was for a 157,000 DWT Suezmax tanker priced at approximately $85 million, with a planned delivery date in 2029.

Great Eastern Shipping currently operates a fleet of 40 vessels with a total deadweight tonnage of approximately 3.24 million tonnes, comprising 21 tankers, 15 bulk carriers, and 4 LPG carriers. In addition to this latest newbuild resale contract, the company also has two Kamsarmax bulk carriers on order, scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026.
