On August 31, Samsung Heavy Industries announced a contract with an African shipowner to build two container ships. The total order value is approximately 444.5 billion KRW (about $320 million), with a unit price of around $160 million. Delivery of the new vessels is scheduled for completion by December 2028.
With this latest order, Samsung Heavy Industries has secured contracts for 35 commercial vessels totaling approximately $6.1 billion so far this year, reaching about 107% of its annual commercial shipbuilding order target of $5.7 billion.
By vessel type, Samsung Heavy Industries’ commercial vessel orders comprise 14 LNG carriers (including one LNG-FSRU), two ethane carriers, four gas carriers, four container ships, and 12 crude oil tankers; in the offshore sector, the company has secured orders for two FLNG units. With these additions, Samsung Heavy Industries’ total order volume for the year has risen to approximately $10.5 billion, representing 76% of its annual target of $13.9 billion.
A company representative stated: “In the container ship sector, demand for fleet renewal with eco-friendly vessels has driven robust ordering activity for ships in the 8,000 to 13,000 TEU range. Having already exceeded the annual order target for its commercial shipbuilding division, Samsung Heavy Industries plans to focus its efforts on securing orders that are selective and prioritize profitability.”
