On August 10, Hong Kong Ming Wah Shipping Company Limited issued an “Invitation for the Project to Build Six 343,000-DWT Bulk Carriers,” inviting China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Qingdao Shipyard as the supplier.
A few days ago, Hong Kong Ming Wah Shipping issued an “Invitation for the Order of One Additional 210,000-DWT Bulk Carrier,” in which China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Qingdao Shipyard was the sole invited supplier.
Regarding the shipyard, China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Qingdao Shipyard was formerly the state-owned Qingdao Shipyard, established in 1949. Following its incorporation into the China Merchants Group’s shipbuilding division, it was renamed China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Qingdao Shipyard Co., Ltd.; its primary products include various vessel types such as bulk carriers, container ships, and offshore engineering vessels.
On December 3, 2025, China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Qingdao Shipyard secured its first VLOC order since joining China Merchants Shipbuilding, comprising six 342,000 DWT Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOCs) commissioned by the German shipowner Neu Seeschiffahrt. This order also marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Qingdao shipyard under its strategic product positioning focused on oil tankers, container ships, and bulk carriers.
China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Qingdao Shipyard covers an area of 790,000 square meters and features a 1,090-meter outfitting quay. It is equipped with two dry docks of varying sizes—a large dock measuring 480m by 76m and a small dock measuring 180m by 28m—as well as two 600-ton and one 150-ton gantry cranes, alongside over 2,000 sets of production equipment. Upon reaching full operational capacity, the shipyard is capable of processing 200,000 tons of steel and producing 1.5 million deadweight tons (DWT) of shipping annually.
With the steady growth of its order book, the smart integrated workshop project at China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Qingdao Shipyard—involving a total investment of RMB 500 million—has entered the construction phase; upon completion, it is expected to achieve an annual processing capacity of 94,000 tons of steel.
