BW LNG Books Two More Next-gen LNG Carriers at HD Hyundai Samho

BW LNG announced on social media that it has placed an order with HD Hyundai Samho for two additional next-generation LNG carriers, scheduled for delivery in the second and third quarters of 2029. According to the shipyard, the order is valued at 748.5 billion won (approximately $508 million), with each vessel costing about $254 million.

Previously, in November 2025, BW LNG placed an order with HD Hyundai Samho for two LNG carriers of the same type, scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2028.

BW LNG stated that all four new vessels feature a next-generation LNG carrier design with a capacity of 177,000 m³. As the first in the industry to adopt a three-tank design—distinguishing it from traditional four-tank 174,000 m³ LNG carriers—this vessel type offers greater cargo capacity and lower evaporation rates. The new design was developed by BW LNG in collaboration with France’s GTT and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The design of this series of vessels effectively enhances freight cost competitiveness while offering high operational flexibility to meet the evolving demands of the global LNG market. They will also be equipped with the latest energy-saving technologies, including the XDF 2.2 propulsion system with VCR technology, shaft generators, and a complete re-liquefaction system, thereby achieving the lowest fuel consumption and emission levels in the market.

Together with the four vessels currently under construction, BW LNG’s fleet totals 34 vessels, comprising 30 LNG carriers and four Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs).
