CMA CGM’s New Methanol-Powered Containership “CMA CGM Osmium” to Serve Asia-Mexico Route

Recently, South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Samho held a naming ceremony for the 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship “CMA CGM Osmium”, built for French shipping giant CMA CGM.

The “CMA CGM Osmium” is 335 meters long, 51 meters wide, has a draft of 15 meters with a container capacity of 13,000 TEU, and flies the Maltese flag.

In 2023, CMA CGM placed an order with HD Hyundai Samho for 12 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships, with a total cost of over US$2 billion, and plans to deliver them in batches before December 2026.

The first of the 12 container ships in the series, the “CMA CGM Iron”, was delivered in 2025 and put into operation on the Asia-Persian Gulf route. The newly named “CMA CGM Osmium” is the latest in the series and will be deployed on the Asia-Mexico route after its official delivery.

Currently, CMA CGM has three remaining vessels in its 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship series at HD Hyundai Samho, named “CMA CGM Silver”, “CMA CGM Copper”, and “CMA CGM Gold” respectively. They are still in different stages of construction and are expected to be delivered this year.
