Fincantieri Lays Keel for Oceania Cruises’ First Sonata-Class Cruise Ship “Oceania Sonata”

Recently, Fincantieri, one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups, held a keel-laying ceremony for the “Oceania Sonata” cruise ship, which is being built by Fincantieri for Oceania Cruises, a cruise brand under Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCL). It is expected to be delivered in 2027.

Built by Fincantier’s Marghera shipyard, the Oceania Sonata has a gross tonnage of approximately 86,000 and can accommodate 1,390 passengers. Its design features spacious public areas and exceptional comfort, continuing Oceania Cruises’ focus on luxury travel and onboard experiences.

The Oceania Sonata is the first ship in Oceania Cruises’ new Sonata-class fleet. This class of ships is an upgrade from the Allura-class. The Oceania Vista and Oceania Allura, also belonging to the Allura class, were built by Fincantier’s Sestri Ponente shipyard and are scheduled for delivery in 2023 and 2025, respectively.

The Sonata-class cruise shipbuilding project also includes three other ships: the Oceania Arietta, scheduled to begin operations in 2029, and two unnamed ships of the same class, scheduled for delivery in 2032 and 2035 respectively.

It is worth mentioning that Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings recently placed an additional order with Fincantieri for three cruise ships of three different types. These ships will be built for its three major cruise brands: Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Oceania Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line. They are all sister ships to the latest ship types previously ordered, including the Sonata-class cruise ships.
