Wuhu Shipyard Establishes New Nantong Subsidiary to Revive Former Rongsheng Heavy Industry Shipbuilding Base

Recently, Wuhu Shipyard established a new shipbuilding subsidiary in Jiangsu, marking a new step forward for this century-old shipyard in the shipbuilding industry.

According to data from Aiqicha (a Chinese enterprise information query and business big data service platform), Wuchuan (Nantong) Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. was officially established on February 9, 2026. Its registered address is No. 38, Shugang Road, Changjiang Town, Rugao City, Nantong City, Jiangsu Province. The legal representative is Zhang Zhao, and the registered capital is RMB 100 million.

Information shows that Wuhu Shipyard (Nantong) Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. was jointly established by Wuhu Shipyard Co., Ltd. and Rugao Lingang Industrial Park Development Co., Ltd., with investments of RMB 60 million and RMB 40 million respectively, holding 60% and 40% of the shares respectively.

Wuhu Shipbuilding (Nantong) Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.’s main business covers shipbuilding/design/repair and port operation; and involves offshore engineering-related projects, including offshore engineering equipment manufacturing/R&D, metal structure manufacturing/sales; R&D of offshore wind power related systems, sales of offshore wind power related equipment, manufacturing of offshore engineering platform equipment, manufacturing of offshore energy systems and equipment, R&D of wind farm related systems, manufacturing of generators and generator sets and ship sales.

It is worth noting that Wuhu Shipyard recently established the “Nantong Shipbuilding Project Team” to accelerate the construction of its Nantong shipbuilding base and ensure that the project is put into production on schedule. The Nantong plant of Wuhu Shipyard is the former plant of Jiangsu Rongsheng Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (Rongsheng Heavy Industry), which had been shut down for many years.

Previous reports indicated that Wuhu Shipyard planned to lease two of Rongsheng Heavy Industries’ four dry docks for the construction of large vessels, including Newcastlemax bulk carriers and VLCCs. Rongsheng Heavy Industries’ No. 1 to No. 3 dry docks were completed between 2005 and 2009, while No. 4 was completed and put into operation in 2011. Due to the dry docks having been idle for many years, Wuhu Shipyard needs to repair and renovate the relevant infrastructure, as well as repair and add new equipment.

Currently, Wuhu Shipyard has initiated a tender for the purchase of one 2400t×162m gantry crane and one 1600t×162m gantry crane for the block assembly, transportation, and section turning in the new shipyard area. The tender notice indicates that the delivery location for the two gantry cranes is the Nantong base of Wuhu Shipyard Co., Ltd. in Nantong City, Jiangsu Province.

The leasing of idle land from Rongsheng Heavy Industry and the establishment of Wuhu Shipyard (Nantong) Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. are the latest measures taken by Wuhu Shipyard to expand its production capacity.

In May 2024, Wuhu Shipyard joined hands with the Economic Development Zone of Weihai City to establish Weihai Wuchuan Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Weihai Wuchuan), which was officially put into operation. Built on the original site and shipbuilding facilities of Weihai Sanjin Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Weihai Wuchuan covers an area of 460,000 square meters, equipped with one 100,000 DWT dry dock and two 50,000 DWT shipways. The company mainly builds high value-added vessel types including 3,000–9,000 CEU PCTC and 50,000 DWT MR product tankers, with a total planned capacity of 800,000 DWT.

Several months after the commissioning of Weihai Wuchuan, in August 2024, Wuhu Shipyard signed the contract for the Chizhou Intelligent & Green Shipbuilding Base project. This marks another key step forward in the implementation of Wuhu Shipyard’s “1+2+N” development strategy of “Focusing on Rivers, Inland Waterways and Seas”. The base will specialize in the R&D and construction of green and intelligent vessels for inland waterways and coastal areas. Wuhu Shipyard plans to build it into China’s leading new energy shipbuilding base.

According to its official website, Wuhu Shipyard was originally founded in 1900 as Fujiheng Machinery Plant. It has now developed into a first-class modern shipbuilding enterprise in China with a history of 126 years. Its main business currently involves a series of civilian ships, including liquid cargo ships, car carriers, new energy ships, offshore engineering ships, bulk carriers, special ships and multi-purpose ships.

Excluding the Nantong base, Wuhu Shipyard includes the Wuhu Shipyard headquarters, the Weihai Shipbuilding base, Anhui Haizhi Equipment Research Institute, Shanghai Haizhi Zhiyuan Technology Co., Ltd., Wuhu Fujiheng Machinery Co., Ltd., Yingxing Financial Leasing (Anhui) Co., Ltd., and Tri Water New Energy Technology. The Wuhu Shipyard headquarters covers an area of 1,210,700 square meters, with a total shoreline of 1,355 meters, and has two 80,000-ton slipways and one 740-meter outfitting wharf; the Weihai base covers 680 mu (approximately 45 hectares).
