Hechuang Heavy Industry Breaks Ground on New Energy Ship Base, Boosting Huanggang’s High-End Equipment Sector

According to the official WeChat account of Hubei Hechuang Heavy Industry (Hechuang Heavy Industry), the Hechuang Heavy Industry New Energy Ship Green Intelligent Manufacturing Base project officially commenced construction on January 10.

Hechuang Heavy Industry New Energy Ship Green Intelligent Manufacturing Base is located in Huanggang High-Tech Zone, covering a planned area of 118,000 square meters with a total investment of RMB 600 million (approximately US$86 million). It is positioned as a green intelligent ship manufacturing base. The project will introduce digital production lines and intelligent management systems, focusing on constructing green ship section smart manufacturing workshops and integrated processing workshops. It aims to enhance the intelligence and cleanliness of shipbuilding while aligning with global green shipping trends.

Hechuang Heavy Industry stated that the groundbreaking of this project is an important measure for the company to integrate into the construction of Hubei Provincial Green and Intelligent Shipbuilding Industry Pilot Zone and support the development of the high-end equipment manufacturing industrial cluster in the High-tech Zone. Upon completion, the project will help promote the upgrading of the regional shipbuilding industry structure and provide support for Huanggang to build a modern industrial system.

According to Wang Lingli, Executive Director of Hechuang Heavy Industry, from 2021 to 2025, Hechuang Heavy Industry’s output value increased from RMB 570 million (approximately US$82 million) to RMB 3 billion (approximately US$430 million), a nearly five-fold increase in five years; orders jumped from less than RMB 500 million (approximately US$72 million) to RMB 6 billion (approximately US$860 million), with new energy vessels accounting for over 90%, and production scheduled until 2027. By 2025, Hechuang Heavy Industry had received orders for over 70 new energy vessels, with a cumulative output value exceeding RMB 1.8 billion (approximately US$258 million).

From 2021 to 2025, Hechuang Heavy Industry delivered a total of 14 LNG, methanol, and battery-powered ships. The world’s first 10,000-ton methanol dual-fuel bulk carrier and a 23,500-ton chemical tanker were among the high-end products that were launched. Foreign trade orders exceeded RMB 3.6 billion (approximately US$516 million), and the vessels were exported to South America, the Middle East and Europe.

Public records indicate that Hechuang Heavy Industry was established in 2015 with a registered capital of RMB 200 million. It is jointly owned by Hubei Bohou Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (99%) and Hubei Yuanbang Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (1%).

Hechuang Heavy Industry is a heavy processing enterprise and supplier of vessels and heavy industrial equipment located in Huangzhou District, Huanggang City. It holds a Class I shipbuilding and repair qualification in Hubei Province and mainly builds inland waterway new energy intelligent ships and high value-added export vessels (LNG, asphalt tankers, special ships, chemical tankers and heavy lifting vessels). Its annual shipbuilding capacity is 5 million deadweight tons and its annual bridge construction capacity is 100,000 tons.
