Breakthrough Bio-methanol: CIMC Enrico Secures Full-chain ISCC EU Certification

CIMC Enrico Holdings Limited (CIMC Enrico) announced that its subsidiary, CIMC Green Energy Technology (Zhanjiang) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “CIMC Green Energy”), successfully obtained the ISCC EU green certification for its methanol processing unit (also known as the PU) in early November this year.

This marks a new milestone for the company, following its earlier acquisition of multiple green certifications for biomass feedstock and storage/sales operations. It completes the final piece of the puzzle for achieving full-chain green certification of the biomass liquid fuel supply chain for the CIMC Enrico Zhanjiang project.

The successful certification signifies that CIMC Enrico’s green methanol product fully complies with the requirements of the RED III regulation and the EU ISCC sustainability certification rules (covering the entire product lifecycle), securing its “passport” to integrate into the global renewable fuel supply ecosystem. This also marks the first bio-methanol project in South China to obtain ISCC EU certification.

CIMC Enrico’s successful acquisition of the PU-end ISCC EU certification marks multiple breakthroughs in domestic and international renewable liquid fuel production projects. It stands as the world’s first green methanol production project utilizing a diverse mix of biomass feedstocks as raw materials, and also represents the first certified case of green methanol synthesis (without coupled green hydrogen) achieved through a pure biomass gasification technology route.

Additionally, this project innovatively establishes an industrial chain integrating the BECCUS process with a bio-methanol synthesis route to achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets, marking a new breakthrough in the high-quality comprehensive utilization of bio-based carbon resources. By optimizing the energy cascade recovery and utilization model across all unit operations, it significantly reduces the greenhouse gas intensity of methanol products throughout their entire lifecycle. The project demonstrates markedly superior lifecycle GHG reduction performance compared to similar initiatives.

CIMC Enrico stated that it will use this PU certification as a starting point to ensure the large-scale production of green methanol through technological innovation and refined management, accelerating the application of advanced low-carbon technologies. Leveraging the strategic geographic positioning of its first demonstration plant, CIMC Enrico will offer global shipping clients a more efficient and economical alternative for vessel fuel decarbonization. This initiative will help customers effectively reduce European Union Allowance (EUA) costs while significantly enhancing the pooling effect for achieving zero-carbon fleet emissions. This comprehensive approach will lower shipping companies’ compliance costs and contribute meaningfully to addressing global climate change.
