NYK Stolt Tankers Places Order for Two 38,000 DWT Chemical Tankers with Nantong Xiangyu SOE

NYK Stolt Tankers, S.A., a joint venture between NYK and Stolt Tankers Limited (“Stolt Tankers”), has signed a contract with Nantong Xiangyu Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (Nantong Xiangyu SOE) in China to build two parcel chemical tankers.

The vessel in question is a Parcel Chemical Tanker—a type of multi-purpose chemical tanker capable of transporting a variety of cargoes, such as chemical products, animal oils, and vegetable oils. Its key particulars are as follows: the Length Overall (LOA) is 184.90 meters, the beam measures 32.20 meters, and the deadweight is approximately 38,000 tons.

Scheduled for delivery in 2028 and 2029, these vessels will join the chemical tanker pool operated by Stolt Tankers B.V. This order brings the total number of chemical tankers under construction to eight, including the six vessels ordered from the same shipyard in 2024.

In February 2024, Stolt-Nielsen announced that Stolt Tankers has reached an agreement with Nantong Xiangyu SOE to build six 38,000 dwt stainless steel chemical tankers for delivery between late 2026 and 2029. With the latest order, there are now a total of 8 vessels at the shipyard.

The two newly ordered vessels are large chemical tankers with a cargo capacity of 38,000 tons. They will feature stainless steel cargo holds capable of transporting various chemical products and will incorporate energy-saving technologies, such as being equipped to receive shore-side electricity supply during port stays, as part of their commitment to environmental sustainability.

Amid rising demand for renewable energy to achieve a decarbonized society, chemical tankers capable of transporting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), other renewable fuels, and feedstocks are expected to see steady demand growth. In response, the NYK Group and Stolt Tankers are advancing the renewal and expansion of our chemical tanker fleet. By replacing vessels with more fuel-efficient ships, we are promoting the decarbonization of transportation while also preparing to meet the anticipated growth in chemical product transport demand.
