On August 29, a shipyard under Japan Marine United (JMU) delivered the 159,097 DWT environmentally friendly Suezmax tanker “Advantage Smart” to Swiss shipowner Advantage Tankers.
Advantage Smart measures 274.3 meters in length, 48 meters in width, and has a gross tonnage of 83,010. Classed by American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and flies the flag of the Marshall Islands.
The vessel is equipped with an Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) or scrubber designed to remove sulfur oxides (SOx) from ship exhaust, preventing it from being emitted into the atmosphere. The It complies with Tier III nitrogen oxide (NOx) standards and meets the requirements of Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 3.
The vessel is equipped with a series of JMU-patented technical solutions designed to reduce energy consumption and minimize pollutant emissions. These include the Super Stream Duct, which reduces energy consumption by approximately 3%; the Surf-Bulb, which enhances propulsion efficiency while cutting energy consumption by 3-7%; and the ALV-Fin (Advanced Low-Viscosity Resistance Fin), which improves propulsion efficiency and optimizes fuel consumption.
The vessel’s other configurations include electronically controlled engines, ballast water treatment systems, and an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), ensuring compliance with the requirements of the Hong Kong Convention.
In the past four months, JMU has delivered at least two Suezmax tankers, the 158,954 DWT Aesop to Ambroisie Shipping and the Ionic Semeli to Greek shipowner Ionic Tankers.
Advantage Tankers currently owns and operates approximately 27 vessels, encompassing a variety of tanker types, including Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), Suezmaxes, Aframaxes, and chemical/product tankers. Most VLCCs are equipped with dual-fuel engines, while some Suezmaxes are powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
By the end of 2027, Advantage Tankers expects to have at least seven newbuilds join its fleet.
