On June 9th, the “Dalian” floating dock upgraded and renovated by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) welcomed the successful launching of the 300,000 DWT crude oil tanker “Yuanshanhu”. This is the first vessel to be repaired in this dock, marking that the newly upgraded floating dock “Dalian” is officially put into full operation.
“Dalian” Floating Dock was originally a 300,000-ton class floating dock. In order to improve the repair capacity of ultra-large vessels, at the end of August 2024, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) started the upgrading project of “Dalian” Floating Dock. After unremitting efforts, the upgrading of “Dalian” was completed in late May 2025. It successfully passed the test on June 1st, achieving the capability to repair vessels, and went into operation one month ahead of schedule.
After the upgrading and conversion of “Dalian”, the length of the dock increased by 70 meters to 410 meters, the area is equivalent to 4 standard football fields, and the lifting capacity increased by 30% to exceed 85,000 tons.
After the dock is put into operation, it can undertake repair of all kinds of ultra-large vessels, covering the world’s mainstream ultra-large container ships, ore carriers and other commercial vessels, and become the first dock in northern China with a length of more than 400 meters of the giant floating dock, filling the blank of the docking resources for ultra-large vessels with a length of more than 360 meters in the north of China.
“Dalian” Floating Dock has added a ballast system and intelligent drainage device, and the power supply capacity has increased by more than 60%, which can meet the energy needs of the new generation of dual-fuel vessel conversion; the newly equipped 3 sets of heavy-duty dock cranes and automated operation and maintenance system can significantly improve the efficiency of high-value-added vessel maintenance; the high-pressure water descaling technology is fully applied to replace the traditional sandblasting process; the facility design is compatible with the needs of clean fuel conversion, and reserves the ability to undertake the maintenance and conversion business of methanol and ammonia powered vessels.
The intelligent control system and green operation standards carried by the dock have been included in the list of green manufacturing demonstration projects in Liaoning Province, providing a practical sample for building a modern vessel repair industrial system.
