Fujian Guohang Ocean Shipping Upgrades Four Bulk Carriers to Methanol Dual-Fuel in $25M

On June 3, Fujian Guohang Ocean Shipping (Group) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Fujian Guohang Ocean Shipping”) issued the “Announcement on the Proposed Signing of an Important Contract (Supplementary Agreement for 89,000 DWT Dual-Fuel New Energy Bulk Carrier)”.

The announcement disclosed that in order to better adapt to international and domestic environmental protection requirements for vessels, Guodian Shipping (Hong Kong) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Guodian Shipping (Hong Kong)”), a subsidiary of Fujian Guohang Ocean Shipping, wholly-owned subsidiaries GuoYuan (YuanHang) Co., Ltd. and Guoyuan Wisdom Co., Ltd. intend to sign a supplementary agreement with Wuhu Shipyard to change the reserved methanol dual-fuel power system of the latter two vessels (hull numbers W23143 and W23144) to “methanol dual-fuel system installation”. The additional account fee for each vessel shall not exceed US$6.3 million. The specific contract is authorized for the company’s management to negotiate and sign.

According to the announcement on December 30, 2024, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Guodian Shipping (Hong Kong) and Wuhu Shipyard signed the “Supplementary Agreement to the 89,000 DWT Bulk Carrier Construction Contract”, changing the reserved methanol dual-fuel power system of the first two vessels to “methanol dual-fuel system installation”, with additional charges for each vessel totaling US$6.2322 million.

So far, four 89,000 DWT bulk carriers ordered by Fujian Guohang Ocean Shipping in Wuhu Shipyard have been converted to methanol dual-fuel.

Fujian Guohang Ocean Shipping said that the company installed methanol dual-fuel power system on its newly built 89,000 DWT bulk carriers, which not only meets increasingly stringent environmental protection requirements, but also takes into account the economic efficiency of operations through flexible fuel structure, reduces corporate operating costs and energy consumption levels, improves corporate competitiveness and has a certain positive impact on the company’s long-term development.

According to previous reports, Fujian Guohang Ocean Shipping signed a contract with Wuhu Shipyard to build 4+6 89,000 DWT methanol dual-fuel bulk carriers on December 28, 2023. Subsequently, Guodian Shipping (Hong Kong) issued two notices of effectiveness of the option of 4 vessels to Wuhu Shipyard on May 27, 2024 and August 28, 2024, bringing the total number of new vessels in this batch to 8.

On November 28, 2024, Guodian Shipping (Hong Kong) again issued a notice to Wuhu Shipyard that two option vessels with hull numbers W23149 and W231410 would be effective and built. So far, all six option vessels have come into effect, and the total number of 89,000 DWT methanol dual-fuel bulk carriers signed by Guodian Shipping (Hong Kong) at Wuhu Shipyard has reached 10.
