Fire Erupts on Decommissioning Vietnamese Offshore Platform in Song Doc Field

A fire broke out on a Vietnamese offshore platform operated by Petrovietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP).

On the evening of May 21, a fire broke out on an offshore platform located at the Song Doc oil field off the southwest coast of Vietnam. The field was shut down in February 2024 and is currently in the dismantling phase.

The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes and had no environmental impact or effect on normal exploration and production activities at other oil and gas projects, the report said.

PVEP is continuing to coordinate with the relevant parties to identify the cause of the fire.

The Song Doc field was put into production in November 2028 via a small wellhead platform connected to a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, reports WoodMackenzie.

The oil field is located in Block 46/02, in the Malay Basin, 144 km southwest of Cà Mau province. The license for the block was originally obtained by Talisman, Petronas Carigali and PetroVietnam, which subsequently established the Truong Son Joint Operating Company (JOC) to operate the block.

In 2017, MODEC’s FPSO Song Doc Pride MV19 was deployed in the Song Doc field. The FPSO was converted from a tanker and installed in Block 46/02 at a water depth of 55 meters, about 170 kilometers from the Vietnamese coast, with a storage capacity of 360,000 barrels of oil.

The Song Doc decommissioning project is the first full-scale well decommissioning project in Vietnam and is considered to be of great significance to the country’s oil and gas industry.
