World’s First Ammonia Dual-Fuel VLAC “Terra Clove” Named at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries

On October 22, a naming ceremony was held at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan Shipyard for a 93,000-cubic-meter Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC) built for Singapore-based shipowner Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS). The vessel was officially named “Terra Clove.”

“Terra Clove” is the first of two sister ships built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for EPS. It stands as the world’s first VLAC to feature an ammonia dual-fuel propulsion system; the shipbuilding contract for these vessels was signed in 2023.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries stated that the vessel has an overall length of 230 meters, a beam of 36.5 meters, and a depth of 23.6 meters. It is equipped with four cargo tanks—designed and built in-house by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries—that allow for the safe transport of liquid ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), with a total cargo capacity of 93,000 cubic meters.

Designed to transport ammonia as cargo and use it as propulsion fuel, Terra Clove incorporates specialised ammonia fuel handling, containment, and safety systems. The vessel is expected to be delivered in November 2026, following its upcoming sea trials.

The vessel is equipped with an ammonia dual-fuel engine, capable of running on either conventional marine fuels or cleaner ammonia-based fuel. It features a shaft generator and systems designed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) and sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions. Furthermore, it carries a comprehensive safety suite, including real-time ammonia leak monitoring and an ammonia emission suppression system.
