Hudong-Zhonghua and Zhonggu Shipping Sign Contract for Two 14,000-TEU Container Ships

On October 13, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation) and Zhonggu Shipping Group Co., Ltd. signed a contract for the construction of two 14,000-TEU large container ships. This marks the launch of a strategic partnership between the two parties, centered on green, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly vessels.

Designed by Hudong-Zhonghua, the vessel has an overall length of 336 meters, a beam of 51 meters, and a draft of 30.2 meters. With a design speed of 21 knots, it is powered by conventional low-speed engines, balancing cargo capacity with operational efficiency.

The vessel is equipped with high-efficiency energy-saving devices, such as a twisted rudder with a bulb and energy-saving ducts. Additionally, it utilizes variable-frequency drive technology for engine room fans and seawater cooling pumps, significantly enhancing energy efficiency through a range of energy-saving measures.

This vessel type has already gained favor with several well-known shipowners. Zhonggu Shipping’s decision to select Hudong-Zhonghua’s design after a careful technical comparison fully demonstrates the maturity of Hudong-Zhonghua’s independently developed ship types in terms of technical performance, operational efficiency, and construction efficiency, as well as their market recognition.

Founded in 2003 and headquartered in Shanghai, Zhonggu Shipping focuses on container logistics as its core business. With more than 60 shipping routes in operation, it is a leading enterprise in China’s domestic container shipping industry. In recent years, Zhonggu Shipping has actively expanded its international shipping routes and continued to modernize its fleet, focusing on optimizing fleet structure and enhancing overall competitiveness. The order for two 14,000-TEU large container ships marks a significant step toward green shipping for Zhonggu Shipping during this critical phase of fleet expansion and modernization.

Hudong-Zhonghua is one of the earliest shipbuilders in China to develop the capability for mass production of large container ships. It possesses comprehensive experience in the independent design and construction of a full spectrum of vessels—ranging from ultra-large ocean-going container ships to small and medium-sized coastal container ships—and has delivered more than 100 container ships of various types to date. In recent years, the company has continued to focus on the research and development of green and smart ship designs. It has accumulated mature in-house design capabilities in areas such as dual-fuel system integration and the selection of energy-saving equipment. The company has delivered multiple types of high-performance container ships to leading domestic and international shipowners, earning a strong market reputation for its high-quality construction and volume deliveries.
