On September 28, Qingdao Wuchuan McDermott Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (McDermott Qingwu) formally signed a contract with Technip Energies (T.EN), a world-leading EPCIC contractor, for the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) liquefaction modules. This marks the third LNG module construction contract awarded to McDermott Qingwu by T.EN.
Under the contract, McDermott Qingwu will fabricate and deliver a total of 50,000 tonnes of LNG liquefaction modules for a large-scale LNG project. The project execution period spans from the second half of 2026 to 2029.
Over the past few years, McDermott Qingwu has undertaken multiple LNG module construction projects. To date, McDermott Qingwu has delivered LNG modules with a cumulative total weight of 135,000 tons.
In 2016, McDermott Qingwu delivered modules for the onshore Yamal LNG project. The project has a single-train capacity of 5.5 million tons per year and a total capacity of 16.5 million tons per year. McDermott Qingwu constructed six fractionation modules with a total weight of approximately 12,000 tons, with the heaviest single module weighing 4,200 tons.
In 2022, McDermott Qingwu undertook the Near-Coastal Arctic II LNG project. This project has a single-train capacity of 6.6 million tons per year and a total annual capacity of 19.8 million tons. McDermott Qingwu constructed two large liquefaction modules and one vapor treatment module, with the total weight increasing to 32,000 tons and the heaviest single module weighing up to 12,000 tons.
In early 2026, McDermott Qingwu completed delivery of the onshore Woodfibre LNG project. This project is the world’s first LNG project to achieve net-zero emissions during both construction and operation, with a single-line production capacity of 2.1 million tons per year. McDermott Qingwu constructed all process modules and main pipe racks for the entire production line, with a total weight of approximately 40,000 tons, and individual modules weighing up to 12,000 tons.
Drawing on experience gained from previous projects, McDermott Qingwu has gradually developed a mature system of modular construction technology for LNG projects.
In terms of liquefaction technology, projects undertaken by McDermott Qingwu cover leading international technology routes from companies such as APCI, Linde, and Honeywell. Its construction capabilities are suited for ambient temperatures ranging from -40°C to ambient conditions, covering both onshore and offshore applications. Regarding module types, McDermott Qingwu possesses the capability to construct all types of modules, including core liquefaction modules, pretreatment modules, distillation modules, and electrical modules.
According to public records, McDermott Qingwu is a joint venture established by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and the U.S.-based McDermott Group, with each party holding a 50% stake. McDermott Qingwu operates world-class module construction facilities, and its core business encompasses the construction and integration of onshore and offshore oil and gas processing modules, liquefied natural gas (LNG) modules, integrated platforms (such as FPSOs), and large-scale offshore floating facilities.
